What is Lobo Day?

Every February 28th, The University of New Mexico’s students gather to celebrate Lobo Day, UNM’s birthday. This year, Lobo Day was one of the first outdoor events held on campus as students returned for an in-person semester. Lobo Day was a commemoration of remarkable Lobos and a tribute to 133 years of tradition, memories, and triumph.

“Lobo Day 2022” Mark

Each Lobo Day has a unique annual theme and sub-brand. In 2022 the designs and event were inspired by piñatas and celebratory moments.

My Process began in Adobe Illustrator with “Lobo Day 2022” typed in Gotham Black, one of the two licensed UNM fonts (this body copy is Gotham Book). Then, I illustrated each individual layer, creating a piñata-like aesthetic and texture. I then used the official branded secondary colors, High Noon, Sandia Sunset, Terra, Turquoise, and Green Chile, to complement the University’s primary colors, Cherry and Lobo Gray.

Photo Booth

In 2022, a professional photo booth enhanced the student experience during Lobo Day. The photo booth allowed Lobos to have fun, be themselves and take home a branded tangible item as a reminder of the celebratory day. 300+ photo strips with my “Lobo Day 2022” mark were printed at the event.

Notably, the secondary mark has been prominently featured in the UNM Student Union Building, accompanying the annual Lobo Day group photo.
